The recent opening of the Plaster Cast Collection of the Department Cultures and Societies at the University of Palermo, after a long recovery and restoration work, is the starting point for some considerations about today’s possibilities of use of the academic plaster cast galleries of ancient sculpture. These collections, since their origin devoted to serve as a help for teaching the history of ancient art, and above all the Greek sculpture, are still worthy of interest. La Gipsoteca del Dipartimento Culture e Società dell’Università di Palermo, di recente riallestita, possiede tra i suoi calchi due gessi di grande interesse. Si tratta delle repliche delle versioni miniaturizzate dei fregi del Partenone e del Tempio di Bassae che lo scultore scozzese John Henning realizzò a Londra, nei primi decenni dell’Ottocento. Le riproduzioni furono inizialmente incise su piccole tavole di ardesia, dalle quali potevano essere ricavati calchi in gesso, destinati alla vendita. Two Borderline Works: The Miniature Classical Friezes by John Henning

The plaster replicas of two miniaturized reproductions of the Parthenon and Bassae friezes are preserved at the Plaster Cast Gallery of the Department Cultures and Societies of the University of Palermo. The original reproductions were made by the Scottish carver John Henning in the first decades of the 19th century. These artefacts, although they have seldom captured the attention of the archaeologists, are of particular interest and from manifold points of view.

Validity and reliability of measurements of the parameters of smile aesthetics: a comparison between digital and plaster models

This study aims to evaluate the validity and reliability of the TRIOS3 Color intraoral scanner (3Shape A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark) and its associated Ortho Analyzer™ software in measuring parameters of smile aesthetics compared with measurements on plaster casts. The study sample comprised plaster casts and digital models obtained from 30 subjects. Height (H), mesiodistal diameter (MDD) and connecting space (CS) of the anterior teeth were measured with a digital calliper on the plaster models and with the orthodontic software on the digital models.
